Anam Cara

I frequently use this Irish Gaelic phrase to describe my husband as it best describes the deep understanding and friendship that 48 years together has wrought between us. He can be authentically himself with me, and I with him. It doesn’t mean we don’t squabble, or get frustrated with each other from time to time, oh no! I am a bit of a bonehead and so is he, so it’s no surprise we can butt heads But we have met a lifetime of joys and sorrows together and come out of it stronger.

As of this writing, we are facing some serious health issues (mine) and he’s been my rock throughout, despite this being indescribably hard for both of us. Because of him, I will emerge from this stronger, more resilient, despite everything. He is my champion, and being able to lean on him while I am weak has brought immeasurable comfort. He believes in me, supports my vision of being an author, reads everything I write, and honestly tells me what he thinks. I wish everyone had this in their life, but it takes commitment... not quitting when the going gets tricky. Not getting sidetracked if some new and shiny temptation worms its way into your life. Trial by fire tempers the bonds of steel.

Not every man is the kind of man my guy is. Not every woman is worth the time either. Don’t take less than you deserve; fight for what you want. It’ll be worth it, I guarantee. Even the heartache.
