Introducing Cinnabunny

I promised to share a story about a rabbit recently, and am now getting around to doing just that!

Cinnabunny was not planned. Oh, no, he was not. You see, somebody dropped him off near our home where we live surrounded by thousands of acres of state forest, and drove off. Now, perhaps I am assuming a bit here but who would bring their pet rabbit out for a walk and then just, well, turn him loose? At any rate, he got noticed by first one running friend, and then another, and then again by my husband and me (and our dog Dawson, who immediately gave chase … Bunny was faster.) I was telling our grand kids about him when I was bringing them up to our place for an overnight ... and just as we pulled into the driveway, there he was. The girls jumped out of the car and ran, screaming, after him.

OK. So, anyone who knows animals knows this is not how you catch a rabbit … particularly not one who has already spent a week fending for itself with lots of coyotes and foxes in the area. As you may have guessed, they were not successful in catching him. Therefore, we put out a Havahart trap and baited it with apple parings and carrots. And waited. And … waited. Three weeks we waited. We finally decided the rabbit was fox food and it was time to collect our trap. That was the day we found the wee fellow IN IT.

We brought him home, set him up in the only digs we had available … an old dog crate. It took time, but Cinnabunny (named for his white icing coat with cinnamon-looking brown streaks and spots) has become a member of our family, unfazed by our ancient cat or our very friendly dog, willing to be picked up and carried around, or cuddled quietly and petted. He’s regressed a bit on his potty training ( he was perfectly litter box trained at first, now he’s gotten a bit messy … we’re working on that!) but he sure is affectionate.

All I have to say to the people who abandoned him: your loss, dudes. Next time, take your unwanted pets to the SPCA. Cinnabunny got lucky. Not all abandoned animals get to have such a happy ending.

OH! One more thing: Be sure to read Cinnabunny’s cameo appearance in Blue Moon, The Lunatics~Book Two, coming out in April 2025!
